Family to Family Network (F2F) began in 1993 with a couple of moms who shared a vision for their young children who had just been diagnosed with a disability. Part of this vision was the dream that their children would grow up as fully participating members of their school and home communities with a bright outlook for the future.
Today these dreams have become realities, and the families of F2F are eager to share with other families what we’ve learned along the way – primarily that our children must have a strong educational foundation and experiences within their home communities to prepare them for a future that includes independent living and attaining dreams of their own.
F2F continues to be staffed primarily by parents who have “walked the walk”. In addition, we have added a Bilingual Assistant and an Information and Technology Specialist to extend our reach to even more families of children with disabilities. One way we do this is through monthly meetings that allow parents to network and learn best practices from leading speakers on disability topics. We also have an extensive lending library and resource center. Other projects include:
• Family Friends, an intergenerational program that matches volunteers (50+) to children with disabilities and their families. The volunteers offer support to families by caring, becoming a mentor, listening, and providing practical assistance to meet the demands of daily living.
• Disability Leadership Network of Houston, a leadership training program, in which participants learn about current disability issues, best practices, decision making processes at both the local and state levels, and how to impact public policies that affect people with disabilities.
Most recently, F2F was approached to serve as a neutral organization working on behalf of the Texas Continuous Improvement Process (TCIP) under the auspices of the Texas Education Agency and Region 9 Education Service Center to assist in fulfilling the goals of the State and of the Parent Training Committee.
Texas Project FIRST is a natural extension of Family to Family’s mission, which is to help families of children with disabilities by providing information, training, referral and support. In the first phase of Texas Project FIRST, F2F has developed this parent-friendly, Bobby-approved bilingual website to provide consistent, accurate information to help parents understand the complex special education issues and become more effective participants in their child’s education process.
